Back Pain Q & A

How common is back pain?

Almost everyone will experience an episode of back pain at some point in their lives, and it’s estimated that some 20 percent of the population lives with chronic low back pain. Back pain often occurs for the first time when people are in their 30s or 40s and becomes more common with advancing age.

What are some of the causes of back pain?

Muscular tension, trigger points and compressed nerves are all common causes of low back pain, as is chronic wear and tear. Disc problems such as bulging or herniated discs are sometimes the culprit, along with diseases such as osteoarthritis or spinal stenosis. Pain can also be the result of injuries such as sprains, strains, or fractures, which sometimes persists after the original injury has healed.

How is back pain treated?

Treatment of back pain will combine treatment for the condition causing the pain as well as therapy to reduce the pain and discomfort. This approach is intended to not only reduce pain but to restore movement and keep the pain from returning. Treatment can range from medication such as anti-inflammatory painkillers, cortisone or steroid injections, ice and cold packs, and a variety of physical therapy techniques. The therapist may use manual therapies, trigger point or myofascial release, and/or therapeutic exercises, depending on the cause and location of the pain.

Can a physical therapist prevent pain from returning?

Education is an important part of a physical therapist’s role. The therapist will teach the patient about correct align and function, and provide training and exercises to help them to maintain the necessary strength and flexibility for correct posture and motion. The therapist may give tips on the best position for sleeping and will provide advice on how to best ergonomically use your body. For example, they will train you in how to stand, sit and move correctly to maintain alignment and muscle engagement.
