Joint Pain Q & A

What are the most common causes of joint pain?

Joint pain occurs in the body for a number of different reasons. Pain can be the result of overuse, strain, and movements like heavy lifting or athletic activity that are continuous. Being overweight can also put a lot of stress on the joints as well. Arthritis is one of the most common causes of joint pain. This occurs when the joint itself begins to degrade as a result of wear and tear or from injury. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition that causes antibodies to attack the healthy lining of joints, can be the cause of joint pain.

How is joint pain managed with physical therapy?

Manual therapies and training from a skilled physical therapist can bring relief to joint pain. The process of joint and tissue manipulation is where the physical therapist uses his or her hands to apply pressure and manipulation. It's been used to relieve pressure on joints, reduce inflammation, and improve nerve function. In addition to the manipulation or adjustments, practitioners can use ice and heat therapy, electric stimulation, and ultrasound for deep tissue healing.

What are some joint conditions that could benefit from physical therapy?

Elbow pain typically occurs when repeated activities cause the muscles and tendons in the joint to become strained or inflamed. Pain often travels from the elbow into the wrist or hand and can even be triggered by hand movements such as gripping. Many people suffer from knee pain. It can be caused by injury or degeneration of the interior ligaments and cartilage. It is usually associated with the bones which make up the knee joint, such as the femur, tibia, fibula, and patella. Three categories are usually used to describe knee pain include: acute injury, medical conditions, and chronic use/overuse conditions. The joint which makes the hip is designed to withstand repeated motion, however, the joint is not indestructible and it can become injured or inflamed. Hip pain tends to become more common with age and it's also more common among people who stand for long periods of time, men and women who are overweight, and those who perform a great deal of heavy lifting.
